Using HijackThis

June 3, 2008

Sometimes spyware or adware just won`t go away.Even after running programs like Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy they still are not found.HijackThis digs deep into certain key areas. The program identifies critical files and spyware.Thankfully internet communities are offering ways to separate spyware from critical system components.

Set it up

When HijackThis is first downloaded it is in a zip archive. When you first unzip it place it in an appropriate folder such as C:–>Program Files—>hijackthis. This is because it does not come with an installer but with the application itself. Then make a shortcut by right clicking it and select the option to create a shortcut on the desktop.

Scan your system

Running HijackThis can be very confusing. Just click the Scan button and it will list suspicious items in your registry and on your PC.Your computer may be fine but you still get a list of entries. If you are not sure which ones are necessary and which ones are harmful you should ask an expert. Save your log and search the internet to see whether the entries were harmful.

Find Out your problems

After you scan for errors, the scan button becomes a Save Log button. After you press this the log opens in Notepad. Then you can go on the internet and find out if the items listed are harmful or necessary.

Clean Your Machine

After you find out which ones you can remove, Check the box next to the items you want to remove and select Fix Checked. Then restart your computer and run an adware removal software and see if it got rid of your problem. If it is still there then continue this procedure until your computer is free again.

Hijackthis is pretty hard to use. You should write an article on what the HijackThis logs mean.

Got something to say?
