Mozilla Extends Deal With Google For 3 more Years

August 28, 2008

Mozilla, the company that made the browser Firefox, has extended its deal with Google for three more years. The deal lets Google be the default homepage of Firefox. In 2006 Google paid Mozilla $57 million, which is about 85% of their revenue. The deal was supposed to expire in 2006 but then was extended to 2008 and now is extended to 2011.

CEO John Lilly:

“We’re very, very happy about our relationship with Google and this
makes sure that Mozilla will be sustainable and thrive for quite a long
time to come”
.

Mozilla uses these funds to pay employees, hosting and bandwidth, and to distribute some grants. Mozilla relies highly on Google and that is what the open source community worries about. Mozilla says that the two companies do run independently.

Amazon buys a book networking site

August 26, 2008

Amazon is acquiring Shelfari, a social networking site for book lovers. While announcing that Amazon will buy them, Shelfari wrote on their blog they were very enthusiastic about this as they stated:

The rain has stopped, the birds are chirping and the biggest news of all–we are being acquired by Amazon.com.

We’ve got some big plans ahead. With more resources and Amazon’s
expertise in building a platform where people come to share ideas,
there are a lot of new opportunities in the future that will benefit
each of you.

Amazon already owns a piece of Shelfari, and helped fund it back in 2007 according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Shelfari lets users make virtual bookshelves and share it with other users.

Google starts Suggest search feature

August 26, 2008

Google Suggest auto completes a phrase when you are typing a search. This is feature allows you to finish that search that you are unsure of.

It was launched back in 2004 as one the "20 percent projects". This feature is meant to help you search more productivily and fill in the blanks or fix misspelled items while your typing insted of fixing it after the query. You may of seen google suggest on other Google products before such as Youtube, firefox extentions, Google toolbar, some of Google`s iPhone and blackberry apps and in other addons or plug-ins.

It seemsthat Google Suggest didn`t change in the four years that it has been announced. the three main things thatGoogle wants to accomplish with this is to help formulate queries,  reduce spelling errors, and save keystrokes.

Increase Windows Explorer default thumbnail size for pictures

August 25, 2008

I don`t understand why Windows XP dosen`t allow you to increase the Windows Explorer thumbnail size.

This is how Windows Explorer shows thumbnails by default:

When you are looking for a picture it does not seem to be big enough. There is a way to modify this without messing with the registry.

You may of heard of Tweak UI, which is a free utility that lets you tweak Windows XP settings. Using Tweak UI you can change the default 96 pixel thumbnail size to a larger one.

After you install it got to the Start Menu –> All Programs –> and Powertoys for WIndows XP –> Tweak UI. After you open it CLick on the Explorer group and then Thumbnail on the left side.

Then change the default size from 96 to 256.  Make sure the Image Quality is closer to high so you can see the images more clearly.
