How to start a Mac in “safe” mode

For Mac OS X 10.2

  1. Press the power button.
  2. Right after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be pressed as soon as you hear the startup tone,not before or after it.
  3. let go of the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Mac OS X 10.2 to 10.3.9

you will see Safe Boot on the Mac OS X startup screen

Mac OS X 10.4 or later

you will see "Safe Boot"
on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in
automatically.

To Exit Safe mode

If you want to exit safe mode then restart without holding any keys durring startup.

How to change Startup With Mac OS X

If you want to change your startup on your Mac just follow these steps:

  • Open the System Preferences of your Mac.
  • Click on accounts in the lower left hand corner.

  • Click Login Items which wil bring up a list of all your applications
    that run when you startup your Mac.

  • Select the items you want to remove and press
    - at the bottom of the list.

Clean Out Your Startup Items

In order to change the startup open your System Preferences and click accounts. Select your username, now you are able to see a list of startup items.Getting rid of them will speed up every time you boot up your Mac.

Clean Up Your Desktop

If your desktop is covered with a field of icons it is a good idea to clean it up.Mac OS X treats each desktop icon as its own window which will affect your RAM.
