How to Recover Deleted Files

June 9, 2008

Have you you ever deleted a file that was realy important and you wish you can some how get it back? Well the good news is that it is possible. It may not be very easy to find the exact file but it is a lot easier than what you think.When you delete a file it is not neccesalirly erased.It is removed from a directry of files so it cant find it. Keep in mind that it can be overwritten, so if you deleted it and have low disk activity theres a more possible chance for you to get your file back.The first step is to get the proper software.

We will be using PhotoRec. Download the correct utility depending on your Operating System. You do not have to install anything, all you need to do is run it. After you run it you should see a screen similar to the one shown below:

 Then select the drive that you wish to recover your files from and select proceed.

 Then you must select the file system you use or partion type.

Here are some common ones.

Windows = Intel

Mac withe intel = EFI GPT

Mac with g4 and older = Mac

Then you select the source partion or the partion where the deleted file is located. Make sure you selected search after selecting the partion that has the files that you wish to recover.

 Then you should choose the File system type. For Windows and Mac select Other and for Linux select EXT2/EXT3.

Then you must select whether PhotoRec should scan the free space or the entire partion.

The tell PhotoRec where you want to save the recovered file. It will suggest to save it to where PhotoRec is running from.
