Speed up Windows shutdown

Sometimes not only the system startup can be slow but the shutdown may also be sluggish. If shutting down your PC is a big problem i will show you some steps to speed your shutdown process. What i will show you today is simply not having XP clear your paging file at shutdown. This is basically a security feature. When you shutdown it clears pagefile.sys and all its contents. This is used to store temporary files. Some people rather have the paging file cleared during shutdown because personal information such as unencrypted passwords can be stored in there. This means encrypted data is secure. However if you do not feel comfortable with this you may not want to proceed. You should be careful when using the Registry Editor because any mistake can cause serious damage.

  • The first step is to open up the Registry Editor. You can do this by going to the start menu and slick on Run.Then type regedit and run it.
  • Then proceed to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
  • Make the value of ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0
  • Restart your computer and now your paging file will not be cleared on shutdown.
